A Few Simple Steps to a Cleaner Couch
Just like your carpets, the upholstery on your sofa needs regular care and cleaning. Here are some simple things you can do on a regular basis to keep your sofa looking great and prolong its years of use as a main piece of furniture in your home.
The first step in sofa care is vacuuming weekly. With all the use your sofa gets from your family there is no doubt a build-up of soil particles in the fibers, not to mention all the crumbs and larger articles that have slipped between the cushion cracks and reside underneath the cushions. Use all three of the vacuum attachments to get optimal cleaning. Begin by pulling out the cushions and using the crevice tool to get the hard to reach areas where the back and the seat come together and form a corner. Use the upholstery tool to grab debris all over and use the bristles of the dust brush to help re-fluff the couch fiber, just be sure to make sure it is clean and free of dust before fluffing.
After vacuuming the sofa leave the cushions of and lean them against the sofa then spray them with a deodorizing mist such as Febreeze to boost that fresh feeling. If your cushions have removable covers stick them in the laundry about once a month.
It is a good idea to regularly flip and rotate the cushions on the couch. Some cushions are made in a way that flipping is not possible but rotating the cushions on some couches may still be a possibility. Simply switch places with another cushion of the same shape to keep one cushion from becoming more worn than the others. If your cushions are not made for flipping and are shaped so that rotating is also out then try to give them a good weekly fluff just like a pillow to help them keep their shape.
Treat spots on your sofa as soon as they happen or as soon as you discover them, because let’s face it sometimes families members make messes they don’t clean up. For the most success in spot treatment of your sofa consult the tag usually sown into the seam of one of the couch cushions. It is a good idea to have all of your upholstered furniture professionally deep cleaned about every 18 months depending upon usage. When you get a professional clean, it will get all of the deep down residue your vacuum misses that builds up over a long period of time. It is also a good idea to have a professional apply a stain guard when they come to do a deep cleaning.
