How to Best Clean Hard Surfaces in Your Home

In recent years carpet, though still a great flooring choice, has taken a back seat to hard surface flooring. The need for hard surface floor cleaning is growing rapidly and surprisingly there are still a large number of homeowners who install hard surface flooring and are unaware that hard surface flooring ,like carpet, still needs a good professional deep cleaning at least annually.

While hard surface flooring options are fairly low maintenance, it is important to the longevity of your floors to have them cleaned and properly treated. The most popular hard surface floors being installed in homes include  hardwoods, manufactured hardwoods, ceramic tiles in a wide variety of designs, natural stones like marble and slate, concrete and anything to be repurposed as tile found on Pinterest. Hard surface flooring options are mostly popular because of the trends in home design and what is being used on popular decorating shows, but they are also highly desirable because of their ease in care and maintenance. For the most part they just need some light sweeping or vacuuming and weekly mopping. One thing many home owners are not aware of or just don’t think about though is the need for professional cleaning and in the case of tile and stone sealing. Even if your natural stone or tile came with a protective sealant applied this will wear off over time and will need to be reapplied to prevent staining.

When hiring someone to clean your hard surface floors it is very important to hire someone who knows what they are doing. Not all companies that claim to be professional cleaners are truly professional. Companies parading around as professional floor cleaners can be spotted because they don’t use professional grade equipment, they don’t have a guarantee on their work, and their mode of advertising that seems suspect. With any professional cleaning company you want to do your homework before signing any agreement. The company you hire is being trusted with an expensive piece of your home and you don’t want it to end up as a very costly mishap that could ruin your floors and have you replacing them  out of pocket before they needed to be.

Another important reason to have floors properly cleaned and maintained is the manufacturer’s warranty.  Nearly every warranty of flooring on all types including carpets includes requirements  for the warranty to be upheld. One requirement is that the homeowner has routine professional cleanings in order to keep the warranty valid. Should something happen to your floor that a warranty should cover you will want to have all your ducks in a row so you don’t end up voiding the warranty and not getting your money back or your flooring replaced for free.

Many flooring manufacturers suggest a professional cleaning be performed once a year to keep your floors in their best shape. After every cleaning of course a new coating of sealant should be applied. Sealant is important to prevent any substance spilled on the surface form sinking into the grout or pores of the stone or tile and creating a permanent stain.
