Spring is in the air that means time for spring cleaning. This is a time to get all of those big cleaning tasks done you wouldn’t normally do on a daily basis. Of course everyone thinks of washing the windows, cleaning the drapes, getting the carpets cleaned, scrubbing the appliances, and rotating the mattress, but there are some tasks in your home you may not have thought about that need your attention. Spring is a great time to start fresh with a new cleaning and maintenance calendar to make sure everything is in good care.
Flush the Hot Water Heater- Minerals from the water can build up in the hot water tank over time. It is best to drain the tank once a year and flush out any mineral deposits to add life to your water heater. For a helpful how to video just search the Internet.
Lubricate Garage Door Springs- Over time the springs that hold up the garage door can weaken from holding the weight of the door through all kinds of weather. Find a non-silicone lubricant and grease up those springs along with hinges and metal rollers once a year to keep them from breaking.
Aerate the Lawn- Aerating is pulling out inch long sections or plugs from the lawn allowing it to breath. This will give you healthier grass with improved root structure, better fertilizer and feed absorption, and less need for water. Aerating should be done annually.
Seal the Tile Grout- If you have tile in your home the grout should be sealed every 6 months. When grout isn’t sealed things build up in there some of them can be harmful to health like mold and mildew. You can seal it yourself or hire a pro to come in and do all the labor. Have them give the grout a deep clean and then seal it up and you are good to go.
Change Air Filters– This one you are probably thinking, “well I already know about that”, but are you really changing air filters often enough? For optimum air quality and furnace performance they should be changed every other month. The easiest way to do this is keep a healthy stock on hand so you are feeling like you have extra errands to run.
Clean the Dishwasher Drain Bin- The drain at the bottom of the dishwasher collects all of the bits of crusty food after it is washed off the dishes. This drain needs to be cleaned out once a month to avoid clogging.
Clean under the Fridge- It can get pretty dusty and grimy down there. Mix together 12 ounces of vinegar and 4 ounces of mild dish soap and pull off the front piece and get everything under the fridge clean. This should be done annually to keep your fridge in top condition.
