How To Make Cleaning Fun When You Just Don’t Feel Like Cleaning
When given a choice between watching your favorite show, reading a book, or lounging at the beach and cleaning, we don’t think we know many people that would choose that latter. If this is you, read on, we have compiled a list of things to make cleaning more fun and enjoyable for those times when you need to clean but don’t really want to.
-
Grab a Favorite Beverage
Just because you are cleaning doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself to a little something special to help you enjoy your time. A nice glass of fancy iced tea, your favorite soda, or maybe even that flavored sparkling water that everyone loves so much. Make it something special that you don’t get too often but love, it will be a nice mood lifter and help you associate cleaning with a little something fun.
-
Put on Some Comfortable Clothes
Grab some clothes you love to wear, but don’t care about getting dirty. If you are cleaning in your best day clothes chances are you won’t be putting too much elbow grease into your work because, understandably, you don’t want to ruin or get your clothes messy. Put some clothes on that you can move freely in and don’t care about getting dirty and get at it.
-
Blast the Music
Okay well not at a level that would drive the neighbors or anyone in the house batty, but turn on your favorite mood-lifting music. It is so much easier to get through cleaning when you have some tunes to lift your mood, you can even dance while you clean. (If you really want to blast the tunes and tune out distraction you can even grab some headphones.)
-
Baby Steps
Chances are you won’t be excited to tackle something that seems overly big and daunting. You may even quit before you begin because of the overwhelming feeling. Instead of taking big tasks head on, start with something small and let the feeling of accomplishment motivate you to take on the bigger things.
-
Give Yourself a Time Limit
If you just aren’t feeling up to cleaning even after getting on some comfy clothes and grabbing a favorite drink and blasting some great tunes, challenge yourself to do it even just for a few minutes. Set a time for maybe 15 or 20 minutes and see what you can get done. Tell yourself if you put in just a little time then you can do what you really want to. You may be surprised at how much you can get done in a short time.
-
Watch Your Show but Clean During Commercials
If you are disciplined enough, you can have the best of both worlds. Watch your show and use the commercial breaks to get the cleaning done. Who really wants to see the commercials anyway? If you have DVR or a TIvo type device you can even pause the show to ensure you don’t return late and miss a few seconds of the show. By the time the show is over you may just have a room in your home completely cleaned up.
-
Give Yourself Something to Work Towards
Beside the amazing sense of accomplishment and the relaxing feel of a clean home, motivate yourself with a reward when you are done. Tell yourself if you get a certain amount of cleaning done then you can go out to dinner, or read your favorite book on the deck in those comfy chairs.
-
Hire a Pro to Deep Clean
Having someone come in and deep clean your carpets, upholstery, tile, grout, natural stone, etc. is a great launching point and motivator. After these surfaces are freshly deep cleaned it will feel like you have a new home and you will be motivated to keep it that way.
