Spot Cleaning Holiday Spills

Spot Cleaning Holiday Spills

The holiday season is upon us with Thanksgiving just around the corner. Soon family and friends will be filling your home for various different holiday gatherings. Though this time of year is one of the best full of laughter traditions and new memories to be made the large number of guests in your house will probably bring a large cleaning job once the festivities have ended and maybe even a few mid-celebration spill cleanups.

Here are a few tips to prepare you for spot cleaning success when it comes to your carpets this holiday season:

First it is important to know what your carpet is made of in order to spot treat it with the best cleaner possible and the best treatment method. Synthetic fibers will have a faster drying time than natural fibers.

Second it is important to clean up spills the moment they happen if possible. If you did not witness a spill and find one after the party is over clean it as soon as you see it. The faster a spill is treated the better your chances are for removing the stain.

Once a spill has occurred grab a clean white cloth or paper towel and blot as much of the stain absorbing it into the cloth as possible. Colored cloths may transfer dye from cloth to carpet so a white cloth is best it is also easier to see if the towel is continuing to absorb the stain or if you need to move on to the next step in the spot treatment process. Begin blotting the stain from the outside working your way toward the center to avoid spreading the stain to a clean area of the carpet making the spot larger. Blot until the carpeting is barely damp and you are no longer able to absorb anything into the towel. It is not a good idea to scrub the stain as you could ruin carpet fibers.

  • The next step is to treat the remaining stain in the carpet with a solution best suited for the type of stain. For a list of solutions for different types of stains consult our home remedies page and other articles in our blog.
