Should I Be Using Green Cleaners?
Since April is Earth Month and we just celebrated Earth Day we thought we would talk about something you can do at home to help the environment and yourself at the same time, making a switch to green cleaning products in your home. Here are some great reasons why making the switch can be beneficial.
Make Your Home Safer
Have you ever taken a few minutes to read the full label on a bottle of commercial cleaning solution? Many of them come with warnings. These warnings say some pretty concerning things including flammable, keep out of reach of children, or even toxic. Small exposures to these types of products probably won’t cause harm (unless say a small human accidentally ingests them), but prolonged exposure like using them to clean your home on a regular basis can be dangerous to your health and everyone else In the home.
Did you know that many of the hazardous ingredients in commercial cleaners are carcinogens, neurotoxins, mutagens, teratogens, or endocrine disrupters?
Cleaner Indoor Air
Many homes have air that is up to five times more polluted than the air outside their door. Some of this is from the harsh chemicals released into the air during cleaning. Volatile Organic Compounds, known as VOCs for short, are released during use of chemical-based cleaning products. These fumes can lead to liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. Breathe easier with the use of green cleaning solutions.
Help the Environment
Truly green cleaning products are made with care and a sense of responsibility to the planet as well as health. These products are mindful of every area of the manufacturing process from the actual cleaning product that goes into the bottles to the packaging it is housed and transported in. They come in recyclable packaging and are made with biodegradable ingredients that don’t harm the planet as they are rinsed down your drain.
Save Money
A great way to save a significant amount of money is to make your own green cleaning products. It may sound time-consuming to make your own cleaning supplies, but it is actually very easy and many of the products you may already have in your kitchen pantry, like vinegar and baking soda.
Use Less and Make It Easier
There are many green cleaners that can do several cleaning tasks. Vinegar, for example, can replace mold and mildew cleaners, window and glass cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, etc. Who wouldn’t love having about 3 to 5 cleaning solutions as opposed to 10?
Create Your Own Scents
Ever stare at a shelf full of cleaning products, find one you are interested in, but wish it came in a better scent? If you make your own green cleaning products you can customize your very own scents. Essential oils are great for concocting your favorite smells without adding questionable chemicals.
